Since the mid-1960s, a revolution has taken place in the West. Tattooing, a practice that was once seen as disreputable has begun to emerge as an art form and is now the subject of exhibitions in museums and galleries all over the world, as well as forming the focus for a host of magazines and books.

This is partly due to the upsurge in the number of tattooists, a significant portion proportion of whom are art school graduates, who give this craft an air of respectability and bring in a different type of customer. These new tattoo artists have introduced many original ideas and influences, causing the repertoire of tattoo designs to expand enormously.

According to a survey done in 2006, 83% of Americans with tattoos do not regret having them which leaves the remaining 17% feeing regret. Their regret is largely attributed to the design they have chosen.

Tattoos carry different symbolic meanings. Tattoo becomes “alive” the moment it inscribes on you. It becomes part of you. Your character, attitude, beliefs and lifestyles may very well complement with your tattoo which makes you an unique and special individual.

Conversely, a tattoo if not chosen properly, may cause regret or adverse effect in life. Before submitting yourself to the hand of a tattooist, ask yourself these few questions, not in any order of priority.

(1) Do you see a tattoo as something you will have for life? If it is an astounding yes to this question, then you are someone who are sure of what you want for having a tattoo on you. You can go straight in looking for a design that suits you and have it taken to a tattoo parlor near you.

(2) Have you given any thought to the tattoo you want to get? You may have in mind what you want for your tattoo or you will just pick a design at the tattoo parlor. If it is the latter, you should seriously consider choosing a design that you are happy with by browsing through some of the tattoo galleries first.

(3) Why do you want to get a tattoo? Is it just for the sake of being cool and following the crowd? Then, you may want to re-evaluate if a tattoo is seriously meant for you.  Or you want to get something symbolic of the person you are right here, right now, to suspend a small piece of your youth in time?

(4) What type of tattoo is best seen on your body? Are you going for something cool, symbolic and unique or something wild and daring or something celtic and tribal or your boyfriend’s or girlfriend’s name or design your own tattoo?

(5) Which part of your body would you like your tattoo to be inked? Not all tattoos are suitable for all body part. You may want to consider where you want to inscribe the tattoo on. Is it your arm, chest, lower back, upper back or leg? There are patterns which are suitable for armband but inappropriate on other parts of body. To look for a tattoo design suitable for your lower back, upper back, armband, belly button or chest, click here now.

Tattoo industry has gained reputable prominence in America since mid 1960s and research has shown that one in four Americans between age 18 to 50 are tattooed. While tattoos have spawned raging popularity in the west, it is still quite a reserved industry in the east.

However, in the recent years, more asian countries are beginning to accept tattooing as an unique form of body art adornment. The disreputable connotation of tattoos once associated with criminals and triads has slowly crept out of the mind of the asian society.  However, there are certain elements in the design that are still dominated by a particular sex.

Male tattoos tend to be identity symbols rather than decorative devices, with traditional images such as snakes, eagles, black panthers, dragons or skulls being particularly popular. Women, on the other hand, often see tattoos more as ornamentation or permanent ‘body jewellery’, opting perhaps for a flower by the ankle or a pretty bracelet wrapped around the wrist.

Tattoo is a hot and everlasting industry as it an uprising practice which has evolved into an art form. A lot more people are beginning to embrace this bodyart and we see many tribal and religious designs that span several generations are still as popular as some of the latest design. Some designs may have evolved but its underlying meanings remain.
